“Dr Acuña is a great physician. He is very knowledgeable and professional. I was there for my 1st consultation on August 23rd 2023. He spoke to me in English and Spanish. He told me my problem may not require surgery. I was thrilled by this news. I was recommended to come see him by a friend in Monterrey Mexico.”

“I had prostate surgery with Dr. Juan Antonio Acuña López and the only thing I regret is not having had the surgery sooner — because I finally sleep through the night and no longer have accidents. Thanks to the doctor's excellent work.”

BPH surgery in Mexico

When enlarged prostate surgery makes sense

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is very common after 50. It is not cancer, but as the prostate grows it squeezes the urethra, causing a weak stream, urgency and frequent trips to the bathroom at night. Not every enlarged prostate needs surgery — and a good urologist should tell you so.

Enlarged prostate surgery in Mexico is considered when symptoms are significant, when complications appear (urinary retention, recurrent infections, kidney damage), or when medication is no longer enough. Before that point, medication, lifestyle changes and active surveillance are often the right answer.

When BPH surgery is needed, Dr. Acuña chooses between two minimally invasive options. HoLEP is laser prostate surgery that removes the obstructing tissue completely, regardless of size, and is recommended as first-line by the EAU 2024 Guidelines. TURP removes tissue with an electric loop and remains a solid choice in selected cases. Dr. Acuña is the author of a published study comparing bipolar and monopolar TURP (Revista Mexicana de Urología, Elsevier).

For laser prostate surgery in Monterrey, the catheter is removed in 24 hours and discharge is at about 2 days in his practice. Patients from San Antonio, Houston and Dallas have already been treated by him, with a first evaluation done remotely.

The evaluation includes your medical history, a physical exam and a review of your PSA and kidney and bladder ultrasound. Bring recent results if you have them: Dr. Acuña explains which option fits your case, and if you do not need surgery, he will tell you.
